I remember the time we  met

We'd read the same books, seen the same movies

Loved the same Beatles songs that brought us near

And after a day of hitch-hiking

We found out that we knew each other better

Than most of the people and friends we'd known for years

 

It started like the greatest of them all

They told us "Hey, ain't you gonna cool down,

This world is not for fun!" but we wouldn't hear

'Cause we were so young and strong

And we stood together against any kind of storm -

Teachers, parents, friends until the skies were clear

 

It really was like the greatest of them all

And I remember a sea side fire,

A lot of friends, guitars and someone said

"Man, I'm so happy you brought me here"

And do you remember a guy who told us

"Hey, I saw you on the street the other day but I didn't call you

'Cause you looked so happy and carried away

I didn'd want to interfere"

 

He also said we were the greatest of them all

And I remember when I worked abroad you wrote

"Bab', you're so far away, I can hardly make it through the day

Please, come home, I want you near"

And do you remember how you told me

"Bab', I don't want the kids to take me away from you" -

How could we know it was not the kids we had to fear

 

But it was still the greates of them all

And I remember the first time you told me

You didn't quite feel the same way 'bout the thing anymore

And how you missed the hungry years

And now little by little, day by day I can see our love

Been swept away by the different way we hurt and don't forgive

Each other untill it looks it's gonna disappear

 

It's just I think it's still the greatest of them all
